DESCRIPTION:International Day of Peace Observation: Apollo Chamber Players perform du Bois\nat Rothko Chapel—Music of Peace and Reconciliation \n\nIn observation of International Day of Peace\, join the Apollo Chamber Players for a program of music for string quartet by Syrian-American and American composers including Alexandra du Bois.  Alexandra du Bois was moved by the on-going refugee crisis in Syria and by people displaced as a result of war and conflict to compose her latest string quartet\, subtitled "Obala" or "Sea\," a piece about peace and knowledge that music travels over the sea and resettles along with all refugees and immigrants. Apollo Chamber Players commissioned and premiered du Bois' fourth string quartet\, Obala\, in 2016 in Houston\, Texas.\n\nThe program will include:\n\nString Quartet No. 3: Mimisha (1985)..............Philip Glass\nSorrow Song and Jubilee (2014)..................Libby Larsen\nString Quartet in E-flat Major (2017)...........Malek Jandali\nString Quartet No. 4: Obala (2016)..............Alexandra du Bois\n\n \n\nFrom Rothko Chapel:\n\n"The Rothko Chapel is a spiritual space\, a forum for world leaders\, a place for solitude and gathering. It’s an epicenter for civil rights activists\, a quiet disruption\, a stillness that moves. It’s a destination for the 90\,000 people of all faiths who visit each year from all parts of the world. It is the home of the Óscar Romero Award.\n\nThe space contains 14 murals created by American artist Mark Rothko. Philip Johnson\, Howard Barnstone\, and Eugene Aubry were the architects.\n\nOutside\, Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk rises above the reflecting pool on the Plaza. The sculpture is dedicated to The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, whose active outer life in service of social justice\, informed by a deeply spiritual interior life\, resonated with founders John and Dominique de Menil. The couple also founded the nearby Menil Collection\, which offers a different sort of unique experience."
