WORLD PREMIERE of du Bois’ new symphonic work commissioned and performed by the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop. Constructed from the beginning to encompass varying degrees of multimedia, spoken word and personal stories via NPR’s Kitchen Sisters, du Bois’ latest symphonic work will be premiered during an evening-length multimedia show during the 50th anniversary of the Cabrillo Festival in 2012. Alexandra du Bois’ Beneath Boundaries finds its inspiration in the life and photography of Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian.

“The radio series Hidden World of Girls by NPR’s Kitchen Sisters explores the diverse lives of girls and the women they become—stories of coming of age, rituals and rites of passage, secret identities—women who crossed a line, blazed a trail, changed the tide. The musical adaptation by [four] leading female composers brings those stories to the concert hall in a dramatic multimedia experience.”
