Berks Sinfonietta will present a performances of Alexandra du Bois’ Noctilucent Song for String Orchestra.
Noctilucent Song for twelve strings (2014) was commissioned and premiered by New York Classical Players and conductor Dongmin Kim. It is fourth in a series of works for varied instrumentation inspired by cloud types and their myriad manifestations. Latin for “night shining,” noctilucent clouds are rare, thin, high-altitude formations that are sometimes (if not exclusively, according to some) formed by the exhaust released from jet planes. In pondering these nocturnally gleaming wanderers, I wondered about human intervention and environmental influence, the accidental yet profound beauty formed by consumption and transition. These inspirations were both multifarious and personal, just as I hope your own listening to this work will be.
